A Sámi-owned family business at Lohisuvanto in Utsjoki, guiding aurora outings from September to April and grayling fishing through the summer.
Aurora Holidays sits at Lohisuvanto, on the Nuorgam road in Utsjoki, which is Finland's northernmost municipality and roughly 450 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle by road. The Teno moves past slowly here and the nearest street light is far enough away that it makes no difference. That distance is really the product. Drive it, and for most of the winter the sky overhead is properly dark.
Nine years, and no group has gone home without seeing them
Tiina Länsman has been taking guests out under the aurora since 2016, and in the past nine years, she says, every single group has seen them.
What makes that possible is that the outings are not tied to a clock or to a radius. If the sky has closed over the resort, you get in the car and drive to where it has not, and that can mean an hour in one direction or an hour in the other, with nobody knowing which when you set off. The aurora keeps no schedule.
The northern lights holiday runs Tuesday to Sunday and includes up to three guided outings. The season opens in September and runs into April, and September to March are the strongest months. Around the aurora there is snowshoeing, reindeer meeting and feeding, a day trip north over the border to the Arctic Ocean, and snowmobiling.
The Teno was one of the great Atlantic salmon rivers. Salmon fishing on it is now restricted because the stock collapsed, and that could easily have been the end of the summer season here. Instead, Aurora Holidays started guiding guests after everything else that swims in these waters.
Early in the summer that means grayling, later in the season trout. The rivers also hold whitefish, pike, perch and arctic char, along with pink salmon, an invasive species you can take as much of as you like.
Tiina's own description of the area is "a world-class grayling destination, and very much unknown". You can see the second half of that from the bank. There is no queue.
Permits are the part visitors underestimate. On the Teno the border, the fishing rules and the disinfection requirements add up to a small bureaucracy of their own, and it is not what anyone wants to research on holiday. Permits and disinfection fees are included in the price, and the guide deals with the paperwork.
Summer also brings photography workshops, and in spring there are trips out to the Arctic Ocean to see puffins and whales.
A cabin on the river, with its own sauna
You stay in their own cabins on the bank of the Teno: two bedrooms, four beds and a pull-out sofa, a private sauna, and geothermal heat. A family of five fits comfortably and six is possible.
There is no single supplement. That is one line in a price list, and anyone who travels alone already knows how rarely it appears.
The kitchen cooks with local and responsibly sourced ingredients, and it also handles group and private events, catering and baking to order. Opening hours move with the season, so check their own site before you count on dinner.
Gluten-free cooking here has been learned properly rather than improvised at the door, and it is certified, with the mark on the wall to prove it. Vegetarian food is treated the same way.
Aurora Holidays is a family business that describes itself as Sámi owned, and it was the first operator in Lapland to join the We Speak Gay Community.
Ask Tiina what matters most in the work and she does not answer with the activity list. She puts it as "meeting people, and genuinely caring that their arrangements are in order". That is the kind of promise a place with a handful of beds can actually keep, which is more or less the argument for coming this far north in the first place.
