December–April for snow & aurora. Salla is remote and quiet year-round.
Drive from Rovaniemi (150 km, 2h) or Kuusamo (110 km, 1.5h). Nearest airport: Kuusamo or Rovaniemi. Limited bus service.
15 slopes, 7 lifts. Small, uncrowded, family-friendly. Known for exceptionally long snow season and virtually no lift queues. The "anti-resort" resort.
A working reindeer farm where you can feed, photograph, and take sled rides with reindeer. Warm kota (tent) with stories about herding life. Open year-round.
Salla was split in half when Finland ceded territory to the Soviet Union in the 1940 and 1944 peace terms. The old village of Salla is now in Russia. This museum tells the dramatic story.
Salla has virtually zero light pollution. On a clear winter night, the sky is packed with stars and Northern Lights. This is one of the darkest places in Europe.
The local fell offers hiking in summer and snowshoeing in winter. The view from the summit stretches into Russia. Trail starts from the ski resort.
Over 160 km of groomed cross-country trails through wilderness forest. Some lit, most not. When you ski here, you are truly alone with nature.
