When is the best time to see the northern lights in Finnish Lapland? The aurora season runs from late August to mid-April, whenever the sky is dark. The best odds fall in the deep-winter stretch from roughly late September to late March; January to March pairs the darkest skies with strong activity and lower post-Christmas prices. The strongest time of night is 21:00 to 02:00 local, when the auroral band sits furthest south.
Where in Lapland has the best chance of seeing the northern lights? The further north and darker, the better. Inari, Utsjoki and Saariselkä (68 to 69 degrees north) can show aurora even on quiet nights thanks to high latitude and very dark skies. Luosto and Pyhä are strong and easy to reach from Rovaniemi. Levi and Ylläs add resort comfort. Rovaniemi is convenient but its city glow usually means booking a tour that drives out of town.
