A tiny fell village surrounded by ancient forests and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Europe's only active amethyst mine sits on the fell above the village. Luosto is for people who want Lapland without the crowds, genuine silence, dark skies, and a handful of excellent lodges.
December–March for snow & aurora, September for autumn colours
Drive from Rovaniemi (120 km, 1.5h) or Sodankylä (55 km). No direct flights, nearest airport is Rovaniemi. Bus connections available.

Ancient forests, deep gorges, and fell landscapes. Isokuru gorge is 220 metres deep, the deepest in Finland. Well-marked trails from 2 km to multi-day treks.
Almost zero light pollution. The fell-top above the village offers unobstructed views to the north. Several lodges offer aurora wake-up calls.
Family-run reindeer farm. Feed reindeer by hand, take short reindeer sled rides, and learn about reindeer herding from a Sámi family.
Small, uncrowded resort with 10 slopes. Perfect for families and beginners. The fell-top views are worth the lift ride even if you don't ski.
Luosto is one of the darkest places in Europe. On clear winter nights, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Some lodges offer telescope sessions.
